célèbre romancière anglaise, de son vrai nom Mary-Ann Evans, puis Mrs Lewes, née dans Warwickshire, en 1819, m. en 1880.
Sa vie d’écrivain se partage en trois périodes : la première, celle des traductions et des études critiques, va jusqu’aux Scènes de la vie cléricale qui ouvrent la seconde, celle des chefs-d’œuvre (Adam Bede, le Moulin sur la Floss, Middlemarch, Silas Marner) ; la troisième ne comprenant que les quatre dernières années de son existence et un seul ouvrage, un volume d’essais : les Impressions de Theophrastus Suchs. G. Eliot réunissait à un degré supérieur les grandes qualités du romancier : puissance d’invention, charme descriptif, variété du dialogue, vérité frappante des caractères, profondeur psychologique. Récit, description, réflexion, dialogue, tout sert, dans ses écrits, comme l’a remarqué Schérer, à la peinture des mouvements secrets de l’âme, à l’étude de la conscience humaine, sans que la minutie de l’observation nuise à la vigueur réaliste de l’écrivain, à la personnalité de ses créations ni à l’intérêt passionné de ses drames.
A côté du romancier et du philosophe, un peu au-dessous, il y a eu en G. Eliot un poète, l’auteur de la Gipsy espagnole et d’Agatha.
